New York State Police patrol vehicles to change colors a bit

New York State Police say that beginning this year, they plan to change  the design of their vehicle fleet. The new troop cars will feature a gray body with gold striping, a shift from the current of dark blue and yellow area motorists recognize.

The new design goes back to how patrol vehicle used to look in 1950. According to WTEN-TV in Albany, State Police said the change honors the history and tradition of the organization while maintaining a strong, professional design that is easily visible and recognizable to the public. Technical Sergeant Jack Keller, the Assistant Director of Public Information for New York State Police at Division Headquarters, said the idea came from the New York State Police superintendent. WTEN added...“We wear a gray uniform and that gray, people may not be aware of this, that our uniform really is, even though it looks gray, black and white thread that’s woven together,” Keller said. “That’s to symbolize the neutrality of a New York State trooper.”

Authorities also say the color change will help save money since it costs up to $700 per vehicle for the current shade of dark blue.
