Alfred State Greek organizations continue to give back

The eleven active Greek Organizations at Alfred State continue to give back to the community through their philanthropic activities. The Greek community group has performed countless hours of service and raised over $10,000.

Currently, ASC has six recognized fraternities, Gamma Theta Gamma, Kappa Sigma Epsilon, Lambda Tau Phi, Mu Theta, Pi Rho Zeta, and Psi Delta Omega. Alpha Beta Chi, Delta Chi Omega, Pi Nu Epsilon, Psi Sigma Psi, and Zeta Psi Omega are the five recognized sororities.

“I am extremely proud of the work and the impact our students that participate in Greek organizations have,” commented Alfred State President Dr. Steve Mauro. “They are building bonds with others in our community while creating lifelong friendships.”

Alpha Beta Chi works with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital by writing to the patients and raising money through various fundraisers.

Delta Chi Omega runs an event, Project Prom Dress, that allows the community members to find dresses and accessories for their proms free of charge. The group has collected and distributed hundreds of dresses.

Kappa Sigma Epsilon works within their Teach Impact Power (T.I.E.) initiative which includes a professional clothing closet and partners with the Career Development Office to provide a professional attire table at career fairs. They also raise funds for Lungevity, a lung cancer charity.

Gamma Theta Gamma holds a Haunted House annually with the funds raised going to the college’s Relay for Life event.

Lambda Tau Phi has teamed with the Allegany Beautification Club and has helped with various clean-up projects around Alfred.

Multiple Greek organizations partner with the Live to Fight club on campus to take part in the annual Relay for Life and the Carly 5k. The Greek community is also very active in campus wide civic initiatives like Spring into Action Day, Day of Service, and the Community Trick or Treat program.

“As student leaders on our campus and in our community, our Greeks continue to develop their leadership abilities through meaningful Civic Engagement experiences,” commented Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs Spencer Peavey. “These actions have helped others for decades and they continue to leave a lasting impact on their own development, as leaders in their field of study.”

Giving back to the community is engrained in the Greek culture at Alfred State.
