Born in Palm Beach Florida to Otis Nelson Sr. and Mary Lee (Ranger) Nelson, John passed away suddenly on Sunday (February 23, 2025) at his home.
He was employed at NYSEG, Philips Lighting, and retired from New York State DOT in Hornell.
John is survived by his lifetime partner, friend and caregiver Loretta Gay of Hornell, his children Justin Nelson of Hornell, and Nicole (Rob) Faulkner of Alfred Station, grandchildren Laniqua (Derrick) Din of Hornell, Brooklynn Geffers of Mt. Morris, great grandchildren Ellasyn Din, Paityn Glover and Elijah Din (Yet to be born) all of Hornell.
His siblings Mary Nelson of Hornell, Linda Nelson of Hornell, Tillie Nelson of Delray Beach, FL, Patricia Nelson Delray Beach, FL, Curtis Nelson of Tallahassee, FL, Chris Nelson of Boynton Beach, FL, and Jonathan Nelson of Hornell. Several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his son John Nelson Jr., his mother Mary Lee Nelson, his father Otis Nelson Sr., his brothers Otis Nelson Jr., Franklin Nelson Sr., and special brother in law Curtis T. Harmonson Sr.
Family and friends will be present on Saturday (March 8, 2025) from 12-2pm at the Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home 354 Canisteo Street in Hornell, where a celebration of life will be held at 2:00pm with Marseena Harmonson officiating.

John was well known for his infectious smile and laughter in the Hornell Community as well as his “Famous BBQ Sauce. He had touched the lives of many always and willing to help others.
