Allegany County Legislature poised for some election
battles, potentially
The 2025 election for Allegany County Legislature could be intriguing,
especially in District IV, which covers Wellsville and Andover. It appears that
former Andover police chief and current county lawmaker Jim Rumfelt of Andover
will not seek re-election, according to the county Board of Elections. The former
Chief was not available for comment Friday afternoon. Rumfelt is completing his first term, having
first been elected to the county post in 2021. Election officials confirmed
Friday afternoon that Rumfelt has/is not circulating any nominating petitions.
However, an area business person and former county
legislator…is. Kevin LaForge of Wellsville is circulating petitions for
nomination and just needs a minimum of 104 signatures. He has until April 3rd
to secure the potential to be on the ballot. The Elections Board said LaForge is running on the GOP
side. He was previously a Republican, then an Independent.
Election officials confirmed to WRN that there has been
interest from others to seek the seat.
A longtime county political observer and former legislator, Dr. Robert Heineman, professor of political science, emeritus, at Alfred University tells
WRN he thinks the District IV GOP race will be interesting. He said, regarding
LaForge, “Kevin is a good man and he was very active on housing issues.”
