Obituary: David Montague Trickler, 84, Canaseraga

CANASERAGA – David Montague Trickler, well known in the Canaseraga community, died peacefully early Thursday morning (Feb. 6, 2025) after a short battle with Parkinsons and a rapid decline after a recent head injury.

Born on Dec. 1, 1940, he was the son of the late Floyd and Frances (Montague) Trickler, he was a former resident of Greece, NY and joined the Coast Guard in 1958 and was honorably discharged in 1961.


He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Beatrice (Wood) Trickler, who he married on June 15, 1968; two children, Christine (Joseph) McPherson of Andover, NY and Michael Trickler (Stephanie Davis) of Hornell; three grandsons, Kyle McPherson (Sage Powell), Justin McPherson (Janelle Sawyer) and Josh Monday; one granddaughter, Rhianna McPherson (Matthew Postelli); one great-grandson, Jacob Presler; two brothers-in-law, Dana Wood of Canaseraga and Bill (Laurie) Meade of Florida; two sisters-in-law, Doris Fisk of Tennessee and Karen (Wood) Mahoney (Greg) of Arkport, NY; as well as several nieces and nephews.


Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Patricia (Gerald) O’Brien; sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Doug Ryan; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Janice and George Wood; brother-in-law, Jim Fisk; and his special puppy pal, Monte.


In his early years Dave served as a town police officer in Canaseraga and later became employed for many years as a truck driver for the former Shay’s Trucking in Dansville, NY and retired from Stott and Davis Logistics in Auburn, NY. He served as Justice of Peace for the Towns of Burn and Grove for many years and was an active member and Past Commander of the Fawcett American Legion Post 1582 in Canaseraga.


He loved people and living in the small village of Canaseraga; he was loved and respected by many and never went anywhere that he didn’t see someone he knew. Dave enjoyed hunting and camping (especially when his children were young) and being involved with the activities of the American Legion. He was an avid car buff and liked attending car shows with his 1968 mustang, that was recently restored by his son, Mike and friend, Ray Vossler


The family would like to express their special thanks to family, friends and neighbors that assisted with Dave’s care these last few days.


Calling hours are 4-6 P.M. THURSDAY (FEB. 13, 2025) and 10-11 A.M. FRIDAY (FEB. 14, 2025) at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home, 285 Main St., Hornell where the Fawcett American Legion Post will conduct a memorial service at 5:45 P.M. THURSDAY. A funeral service will take place at the funeral home at 11 A.M. FRIDAY with Fr. John Cullen officiating. He will be laid to rest, with full military honors provided by the Fawcett American Legion Post, at the Canaseraga Cemetery following the funeral service.


The United States flag and the Coast Guard flag will proudly fly at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home in recognition of Dave’s service.


In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to either the Canaseraga American Legion, 83 W. Main St., Canaserga, NY 14822 (envelopes will be available at the funeral home) or to the Canaseraga Lion Club.
