Disc Golf Course now open at Alfred State

Health and Wellness Services and Campus Recreation have combined to open an 18-hole Disc Golf Course at Alfred State. The course starts right next to the throwing area above the parking lots surrounding Pioneer Stadium.

“This was a great collaboration between Health and Wellness Services and Campus Recreation,” commented Assistant Vice President of Well-being and Student Support Jonathan Hilsher. “We worked with Guthrie Collins, a professional in the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA), to design the course and we are excited to offer a new wellness and recreation opportunity to our campus.”

Coordinator of Campus Recreation Brooke Scianna is excited for students to use the course. “This course provides another opportunity for students to get out and enjoy our beautiful surroundings. We continue to add recreation options for students to take advantage of. I am hopeful that this course will lead to the formation of a club disc golf team in the future.”

“Jonathan and I would like to thank our facility team at the college for all their hard work and making this course a reality.”

The course features red and blue tee pads and loops around the hills on the upper part of campus. The course has been designed in a way for players to shorten the number of holes they play depending on interest and time. It is suggested to wear sturdy shoes and long pants as the course has multiple elevation changes and is primarily in the woods.

There is no cost to play the course, and discs are available to borrow from the Recreation Office located in the Student Leadership Center. Contact Scianna at sciannbl@alfredstate.edu for more information.

Scianna continued, “We know our students are looking for ways to relax and unwind when they aren’t in class. This course will provide great opportunities for a different type of exercise along with some amazing views of the valley.”

The Disc Golf Course is part of a continued effort to provide healthy activities for students on campus. The Shults Fitness Studio was opened in January while The Studio opened in Pioneer Center during the 2022-23 school year.

The Recreation Department will be hosting a Disc Golf Tournament during Homecoming 2024 on Saturday, October 19 (Sign up for a tee time of 10:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m.).
