On June 10, 2018, Deputy Shawn Whitford was assigned to the Sheriff’s Office Operation Safe Interstate initiative when he stopped a vehicle on Interstate 390 for a violation of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law. The Deputy Sheriff identified the driver of the vehicle as 33-year-old Joseph L. Butterbaugh. During the course of the Deputy's roadside investigation, he allegedly noticed items of drug paraphernalia in plain view in the vehicle. Further investigation revealed that Butterbaugh was allegedly in possession of a used bag of heroin and a vial of heroin.Butterbaugh was arrested and charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 7th Degree.
Butterbaugh was turned over to Central Booking Deputies at the Livingston County Jail for processing and pre-arraignment detention. Butterbaugh was later arraigned at the Livingston County Centralized Arraignment Part at the Livingston Count Jail before Judge Mann. The Judge released Butterbaugh on his own recognizance.
