BELMONT - Patricia C. “Pat” Layton, 75, passed away Friday (June 22, 2018) at St. James Memorial Hospital in Hornell following a lengthy illness, with her family at her side.
Patricia was born on Sept. 28, 1942 in New Orleans, La. to Patrick W. and Viola M. (House) Murray. She completed her General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and continued with her education development with an Associate’s degree in Human Services. She earned her NYS Cosmetology License and NYS Real Estate License.
As a single mom of five children, she was very proud of her accomplishments. Over the years, she worked as a waitress, cook, shoe salesperson, housekeeper, and secretary. She owned and operated Pat’s Beauty Salon in Scio for 10 years and Custom Fashions with her sister, Nita Wells in Canisteo for an additional 2 years. As a dedicated social worker, she was instrumental in the development of the Domestic Violence Program at ACCORD Corporation in Belmont which included Hot Line training, support groups for battered women and their children and a safe house. Later she served as a Mentally Ill Chemically Addicted (MICA) counselor.
Pat is survived by four children, Tim (Sandra) Dunham and Dan (Deb) Dunham, both of Scio, Vickey Layton (Susan Kita) of Rochester and Stacy (Bill) Bentley of Belmont; one sister, Jan (Dan) Todd of Canisteo; 12 grandchildren, Jimmy (Tara) Stebbins, Kristy (Curtis) Blouvet, Heidi (Tim) Putnam, Tara (David) Calhoun, Justin (Amy) Dunham, Kyle Chelsea) Dunham, Katie (Jordan) Gonyea, Sarah (Rob Ford) Bentley, Alec Bentley, Elizabeth Bentley, Morgan Bentley and Bailey Layton.
Additionally, she is survived by 12 great grandchildren, Julian Tibbits, Riley Stebbins, Kendal Blouvet, Madison Blouvet, Charlotte Blouvet, Olivia Blouvet, Parker Blouvet, Gage Putnam, McKenzie Putnam, Paisley Calhoun, Makayla Dunham and Jason Daniel Dunham; a foster daughter, Kimberly Newton; two special friends, Sharon Prentice and Judy Adams; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by a son, Scott Dunham; a brother, Robert Adams; a sister, Anita Wells and a grandson, Jason Dunham.
Pat was all about family and friends. She loved sewing and crafting which included countless Halloween costumes for herself (yes, she loved to join in), her children and grandchildren. She was a cunning prankster, frequently breaking the family into laughter with her antics. Pat made blankets and other gifts at Christmas to give to her family, doctors, nurses and anybody else to brighten their day. Even in the midst of the chaos of a busy life, she never missed one of her kids or grandkids sporting events or other important milestones. Pat had a servant’s heart as shown in her love of cooking and giving out haircuts to all of her family. She always had time to listen their stories and problems and was glad to offer her tender advice.
Pat’s children give tribute to her loving dedication as their mother and express deep gratitude for all she gave and did for them.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Baker-Swan Funeral Home, 3256 Riverside Drive in Wellsville. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday at noon at the funeral home with Rev. Glenn Layfield of the Church of Christ Scio, officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
