TONAWANDA, N.Y.---Arlene E. Berger, 88, of Tonawanda,
formerly of Oswayo, Pa., passed away on Friday, August 18, 2017, in the
Schofield Residence in Kenmore.
Born on July 22, 1929 in Galeton, Pa., she was a daughter of
Frederick and Ellen Hale Coole. On May
25, 1957 in Harveys Lake, Pa., she married James T. “Jim” Berger, who survives.
She was a graduate of Salamanca (N.Y.) High School and a
graduate of Bryant and Stratton in Buffalo.
Mrs. Berger served in the U.S. Naval Reserves for four years.
She was employed at M & T Bank in Buffalo and later was
employed in sales at the former Jenss Department Store in Buffalo.
While living in Oswayo, Mrs. Berger attended the Ellisburg
Union Church (now Ellisburg Union Wesleyan Church) in Ellisburg. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting and
needlepoint. She loved attending church,
Bible study, and most especially being with her family.
Surviving besides her husband are a son, Kurt J. (Wendy)
Berger of Shinglehouse; a daughter, Gretchen A. (James) Carney of Tonawanda;
five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret “Peggy”
(James) Byrne of Florida; a brother, William (Sharon) Coole of New Albany, Pa.;
and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Berger was predeceased by a
brother, David Coole; and three sisters, infant twin girls and Phyllis Pease.
Family and friends may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday
and from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, August 21, 2017 at the Virgil L. Howard
Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse, where funeral services will
follow at noon on Monday with the Rev. Roy K. Ward, pastor of Ellisburg Union
Wesleyan Church, officiating. Burial
will be in Rathbone Cemetery, Coneville.
