Obituary: Gary A. Moon, 76, Whitesville

WHITESVILLE – Gary A. Moon, 76, passed away Wednesday (Sept. 9, 2020) at Elderwood in Hornell following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Moon was born on May 12, 1944 in Blossburg, Pa. to Lee Chester and Margaret Inez (Carmen) Moon. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1962-1964. On May 10, 1969 at the Whitesville United Methodist Church he married Jacqueline K. Graves, who survives.
Gary worked for Eberle Tannery in Westfield, Pa. from 1965-1974 and as a food service manager for Alfred University from 1985-1997. He also worked as a janitor for Andover Central School and Whitesville Central School.
In addition to his wife of 51 years, Gary is survived by four daughters, Courtney (Eric) Gee of Elkland, Pa., Danielle (Michael) Dziama of Monroe, Mich., Aimee Moon of Whitesville and Robin Moon; one brother, Edwin (Beverly) Moon of Westfield, Pa.; one sister, Sandra (Ken) Crumb of Orlando, Fla. two sisters-in-law, Norma Moon and Cheryl Moon, both of Westfield, Pa.; four grandchildren, Amanda Dziama of Toledo, Ohio, Cameron Dziama of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Holly Coppini and Carter Coppini, both of Whitesville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Richard Moon, Louis Moon, Wayne Moon and Robert (Suzie) Moon; one sister, Barbara Peet; and three infant siblings, Bonnie Moon, Joseph Moon and Freddy Moon.
Gary’s hobbies tended toward the outdoors as he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and deep-sea fishing. He was a lifetime member of the Whitesville Fire Department and a proud member of Kappa Psi Upsilon Fraternity Alfred Chapter.
Gary was very proud of his children and grandchildren, as well as Jackie—the love of his life. Gary’s favorite place was the beach, especially the Outer Banks of North Carolina. For decades, he and his family vacationed there annually during the first week in July. They created many fond memories centered around the Ocracoke Ferry and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. He and Jackie attended the First Flight Centennial Celebration in Kitty Hawk in December, 2003 where they delighted in a Beach Boys concert. In spite of the nearly freezing temperatures, this was a highlight of their OBX experiences.
Gary will be honored by his family at a graveside memorial at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Andover. Online condolences may be offered at www.baker-swan.com. Memorial contributions in Gary’s name may be made to SPCA Serving Allegany County, PO Box 181, Belmont, NY 14813.
