Today marks the first day of fall. On this day, both day and night are equal, with 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark. The Autumnal Equinox signifies the start of shorter days and longer nights in the Northern Hemisphere and the opposite in the Southern Hemisphere. In the ancient cycle of the year, this was actually the second harvest, the first being on August 1st. Today, the Autumnal Equinox is synonymous with not only the completion of the harvest, but also the end of summer. For many across the country that is apparent by the subtle changing of the leaves from green to yellow and orange.
