The orchestra and choir began this joint tradition three years ago, recognizing the power of film and video game scores and wanting to bring that excitement to the Houghton community. Audience members will also experience the majestic stylings of modern composer John Williams through pieces from films such as Saving Private Ryan, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Olympic favorite “Summon the Heroes,” originally written for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Selections from the Star Trek series and “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables will also be featured. Segments from each of the films will play on screen during the live performance of the corresponding music.
“Cinema music has been one the most exciting genres of contemporary music in America,” remarks Dr. Armenio Suzano, dean and director of the Greatbatch School of Music. “The wide range of emotions it entails and the accessibility with which it captivates audiences around the world is quite astounding. The Houghton Symphony Orchestra and the College Choir are preparing a concert where there will be a special gift for just about every movie music lover out there. It will be a concert evening like no other!”
