Wellsville - Fred C. Miles, age 93, formerly of the
Stannards Road passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2017, at Jones Memorial
Hospital in Wellsville. He was born in Machias on August 27, 1923 to Merle and
Martha Buhr Miles. On December 28, 1945 he married Helen C. Howard who
predeceased him on June 15, 2011. Fred had lived on the Stannards Road for over
50 years. He had served his country during WWII in the US Army Air Corps in the
China, Burma, and India Theater as an air craft mechanic. Fred retired from
Dresser Rand in 1985 as a Service Technician only to return there as a
consultant. Fred was a self-taught man. He started work as an electrician where
he designed the panels for turbines and worked his way up to a Service
Technician. He enjoyed working in his machine shop where he built many race
cars in the 1950’s and 1960’s and after he retired he built a B modified sprint
car. Fred also enjoyed building and flying remote control model airplanes. He
was a life member of the American Legion Post #702 of Wellsville and had been a
member of the Stannards United Methodist Church.
Fred is survived by 3 daughters, Carol [Jack] Cashmore of
Florida, Diana [Paul] Winchell of Belmont , and Terry [George] Dash of
Colorado; 7 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, and 3 great great
grandchildren;2 sisters, Katherine Keller, and Ruby Golley; a brother, Ernie
Miles; several nieces and nephews.
Fred was predeceased by his wife, Helen; 3 brothers, Paul
Miles, Darwin Miles, and Hank Miles; a sister Rosie Treat.
Friends are invited to attend a grave side service on
Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at 11 am in the Cuba Cemetery with full military
honors. Memorial contributions in Fred’s name may be made to the Allegany
