James L. Cannon, 71, passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2018
at Highland Hospital in Rochester following a brief illness.
Mr. Cannon was born in Wellsville on Jan. 23, 1947 to James
and Marion (Trowbridge) Cannon.
A lifelong resident of Andover, James attended Andover
Central School (class of 1964). He was employed by CE Air Preheater in
Wellsville before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1966. James proudly served his
country for four years. He was stationed
in Norfolk, Virginia and sailed the Midway Islands and Mediterranean Sea. James
spent six months in San Diego, California where he received his electrician
training while in the Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1970.
James returned to Andover in 1970 and was promptly re-hired
by CE Air Preheater in Wellsville. He was a loyal machinist and purchaser for
more than 35 years while the company changed hands from Preheater to ABB, and
finally to Alstom Power Air Preheater Company, retiring in 2006.
In his younger years, James loved playing sports of all
kinds, especially baseball. On April 5, 2008, James was inducted into the
Allegany County Athletic Association Hall of Fame. He was an avid baseball fan
throughout his life and also loved NASCAR and local racing events. He especially enjoyed watching the World
Series each year. James was a lifetime
member of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and will be remembered as always
having a patriotic love for his country.
James was married on June 18, 1966 to the former Linda
Walter who survives. Also surviving are his son, Bradley (Debra) Cannon of
Andover; his grandchildren, Dylan, Kyla, and Ellasyn whom he loved dearly; one
sister, Ann (Michael) Howland of Maine; a nephew and several nieces and
cousins.
The family of James L. Cannon will receive friends on Friday
from 2:00 – 4:00 PM and 7:00 – 9:00 PM at Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Andover.
Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family with
burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
James’ family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial
contributions in his name be made to Alfred Station Fire Department, 623 State
Route 244, Alfred Station, NY 14803. Memorial envelopes will be available at
the Baker-Swan Funeral Home.
