Obituary: Donald C. Windus, 97, Wellsville


Donald C. Windus, 97, of Wellsville, NY, went to be with his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Monday, June 11, 2018 and is reunited with his wife, Betty Jean.  Born December 31, 1920, at home in Mayville, NY, he was the son of Herbert and Mae Corbin Windus.  On February 26, 1949, he married the former Betty Jean Hanchett, who predeceased him on October 13, 2017.  Don attended the Pleasantville District School until the 8th grade, then his family moved to the Back River Road in Belmont.  He was a 1939 graduate of Scio Central School. After working on the family farm for 10 years, he went to work for Thomas Klein & Son learning the plumbing trade. He was employed as a plumber by L.C. Whitford, LCC for several years, which he enjoyed and took pride in.  After retiring from plumbing, he worked at Cannon's Clothing Store, Bells Grocery Store and ten years as a courier for Steuben Trust Bank.  Don and his wife Betty Jean resided for 50 plus years on the Back River Road in Belmont prior to moving to Wellsville in 2006. He built their home on the Back River Road using a team of horses and milling the lumber off the homestead farm. When Don was not mowing his lawn in his spare time, he enjoyed playing piano. Surviving are:  four children:  Ellen Harris of Candor, NY, Kimberly (Warren) Dickerson of Belmont, Philip (Louise) Windus of Belmont, and Marjorie (Louie) Smith of Scio;  his brother and sister-in-law, Harold (Patricia) Windus of Toccoa Falls, GA;  a sister-in-law, Wendy Windus of Florida;  a brother-in-law, Alan Hanchett of Wellsville;  nine grandchildren, Connee Dickerson, Joseph Dickerson, Marsha Windus, Craig (Tamara) Windus, Jody Chalker, Bronson Harris, Sara (Shawn) Mahoney, Erin (Dana) Willett, and Adam Trivisondoli;  five great-grandchildren, Noah Windus, Evan Windus, Haley Windus, Wyatt Willett, and Madyson Mahoney;  several nieces and nephews.  In addition to his wife Betty Jean, he was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters-in-law; John (Pauline) Windus, Robert (Doris) Windus, and Ned Windus.  A special thank you to Mindy Cross of the Visiting Nurse Association, Dr. David Pelkowski, Yao Zheng, NP and Catherine Burys, NP and entire staff at JMH/UR Cardiology, Dr. Dean Hanna, Dr. James Rummel and Hospice Care Services for their excellent medical care and compassion.
