Demolition begins Wednesday for Steuben construction project

BATH – Demolition of two buildings on East Morris Street in Bath is expected to begin Wednesday (March 22) in anticipation of Steuben County’s first capital construction campaign in nearly 10 years. County Manager Jack Wheeler said the construction of an office complex on East Morris, and a storage/records building on Mount Washington, is expected to begin in early May. The combined cost of the two projects was estimated earlier at $8.7 million, with final project design and costs slated for review by the county Legislature when it meets in regular session at 10 a.m. Monday. Steuben officials have been concerned for years about the lack of space at the county building and the inconvenience for residents looking for services. In addition, the county now houses electronic voting machines and state-required records at the Old Health Care Facility on Mount Washington. The projects follow a two-year-long study by county legislators on options proposed by project engineer Labella Associates. Steuben’s last capital project was the construction of the county Health Care Facility, which opened in June 2008.
