Wellsville: Village to pay $1,100/month for new space-cost to move is $100K

Wellsville resident Doris MacFarquhar examines
notes as she addresses the village board
When 2020 rolls around, the Village of Wellsville will cough up about $1,100 a month in rent for its new space at 23 North (the former Burrous Building). Mayor Randy Shayler told us before Monday night's village board meeting that he expects the village offices to relocate by the end of the year. The Town offices, which currently share space with the Village in the Municipal Building at 156 North Main Street, won't be joining the Village in its move. Shayler said as long as the village owns the Municipal Building, it will allow the Town to remain there...for now. However, the potential move prompted several questions from village resident Doris MacFarquhar during Monday's village board meeting. The mayor explained the rent cost, but the wife of the late Director of Public Works then asked what the moving cost would be. "$100,000," the mayor responded. He noted the cost had been budgeted. MacFarquhar asked once the village vacated the historic Municipal Building, if there was a plan for the building's future. Mayor Randy Shayler said there has been some interest by others to utilize the building. Town Supervisor Shad Alsworth previously said his government is working on an independent location, but wasn't ready to spill the details. It's unclear how long the village government will allow the town office to remain on site. Mayor Shayler said the village will enter in to a thirty-year rental agreement for the new space. He said the rental cost is far more efficient than trying to update the aging Municipal Building.
