Graves "apologizes" to Sheriff Whitney

To The Editor:
Apparently, in my last letter to the Editor on this site, I incorrectly stated that our Sheriff, Rick Whitney, had no certification in Corrections training.  On social media the Sheriff has posted the certificate below to prove that I have “once again” uttered “Fake News” and that I am a “liar”.

Although I am very pleased that he must have engaged in this training – as uttering a false certification through the state Commission of Corrections would, I assume, lead to adverse consequences – I question the wisdom of attending training that was provided by his own staff.  I know, on a personal basis, at least some of his instructors and they are good people. They are dedicated to their craft and I applaud them for what they do. Having him present during their presentations must have caused them significant stress as he is not only there to learn but also – as anyone would naturally assume – evaluating their skills. Remember, he ultimately authorizes the payroll.

In my heart I do not believe I intentionally “lied” or misrepresented facts. I based what I wrote on a brief discussion I had with him at a Public Safety meeting.

I apologize, Sheriff, if I caused you any distress over this. The underlying reason for the discussion was to draw attention to your – as I and others perceive it – proclivity to focus on areas of the law – performed by others at a cost shared by all New Yorkers - not just the Taxpayers of Allegany County.  My learning has been that it’s not about how many things you do, it’s about the value of the things you are supposed to do well.  In our Counties case it’s Corrections, Civil Process, Dispatch and Building/Court Security. Focus there and our differences will disappear.

Sincerely submitted:
