SPARTA: Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty reports the arrest of three Rochester residents on several felony charges after an investigation by the Sheriff's Office.
On April 15, 2018 at approximately 3:31 p.m. the Livingston County Emergency Communications Center (E-911) received a call from Onstar reporting that a 2016 Chevy Silverado pickup had been stolen in the City of Rochester and that it was currently traveling in the Town of Sparta. As Deputies were dispatched to the area, the pickup had reportedly stopped at a residence on Story Road in the Town of Sparta. Once Deputies were in the area, OnStar remotely shut the vehicle down, deactivating any possibility of further operation. When the responding Deputies arrived at the residence, they located the stolen pickup along with three suspects who were all from Rochester. The three suspects were identified as 22 year old Jordan S. Vanhouter, 25 year old Jaquan E. Cage, and 27 year old Misty L. Wiley.
The three were taken into custody and Deputies began to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stolen vehicle. The Sheriff’s Office investigation alleges that Jordan Vanhouter stole the pickup in the City of Rochester the day before after finding a set of keys and walking around beeping the alarm until he found the vehicle. Vanhouter then allegedly stole a set of license plates off a different vehicle to avoid detection by police. Vanhouter later picked up Jaquan Cage and Misty Wiley and drove the stolen truck out to a house on Story Road that belonged to a relative of Vanhouter. Once the three arrived they allegedly forced entry into the residence and they stole a television. The responding Deputies caught them in the act of the crime thanks to the Onstar call. All three were also found to be in possession of marijuana, deputies said.
Sheriff's Deputies arrested and charged Jordan Vanhouter with felony Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the 3rd Degree, felony Burglary in the 2nd Degree, Criminal Mischief in the 4th Degree, Petit Larceny, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana, along with several traffic tickets for violations of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law.
Jaquan Cage was arrested and charged with felony Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the 3rd Degree, felony Burglary in the 2nd Degree, Petit Larceny, and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana.
Misty Wiley was arrested and charged with felony Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the 3rd Degree, felony Burglary in the 2nd Degree, Petit Larceny, and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana.
Vanhouter, Cage, and Wiley were turned over to Central Booking Deputies at the Livingston County Jail for processing and pre-arraignment detention. The District Attorney's Office was contacted in regards to bail due to the felony charges. It was recommended that Vanhouter and Cage be held on $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond and Wiley be held on $2,500 cash or $5,000 bond.
All three were later arraigned in the Town of Sparta Court before Judge Scollon . The Judge did remand all three, Vanhouter, Cage, and Wiley, to the custody of the Sheriff on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.
The Sheriff's Office is continuing the investigation in partnership with the Rochester Police Department and further charges are pending.
Handling the investigation for the Sheriff's Office were Sergeant Ryan Swanson, Sergeant Matthew Orman, Deputy Morganne Harrington, and Deputy Michael Wade from the Road Patrol Division. On scene for the Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division were Investigator Gene Chichester and Deputy Michael Williams (FIU) and from the Communication's Center were Dispatcher Rich Alexander, Dispatcher Melissa Mumm, and Dispatcher Steve Rose. Also assisting with the incident was Officer Larry Burley from the Dansville Police Department.
"Thanks to the call from Onstar, and their ability to track the vehicle turn by turn, the stolen vehicle was located but even better a burglary in progress was caught in the act and the people responsible will be held accountable," stated Sheriff Dougherty. "It is a great day when modern technology helps the good guys."
