Obituary: David Miess, 86, Scio

SCIO — David Miess, of Scio, died Wednesday (March 15, 2017) at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville following a lengthy illness. He was born July 7, 1930, in Wellsville, a son of the late Harry and Leonora Flisher Miess. On March 23, 1967, he married Gloria Leonard, who survives. David graduated from Belmont Central School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953, serving in the Korean War. He was formerly employed at Genesee Valley Nurseries and Community Lanes, and he retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1989. He played baseball for the Belmont and Friendship town teams and coached Babe Ruth Baseball in Belmont for several years. He also enjoyed bowling and golf. Surviving in addition to his wife are his son, David (Nickia Lane) of Andover; two daughters, Diane (William Perham) Miess of Wellsville and Karen (Scott) Herdman of Angelica; six grandchildren, Makaila and Kaiden Miess, Jordan and Savannah Perham, and Wyatt and Madison Herdman; two stepgrandchildren, Hayvin and Kamee Sheahen; one brother, Richard (Helen) Miess of Belmont; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by an infant daughter, Mary Elizabeth. To honor David’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. Friends are invited to a celebration of David’s life to be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 1, 2017, at the Knights Creek Evangelical Church in Scio. The Rev. Carl Kemp will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Memorials may be made to the Scio Memorial Library, Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Scio Fire Department or any charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements are under the direction of the Mulholland-Crowell Funeral Home in Wellsville.
