OLEAN - Joyce Baldwin, 98, of 414 Prospect Avenue, passed away on Tuesday, December 8, 2020, at her home, following a lengthy illness, with her loving son Gordon by her side.
Joyce was born on December 19, 1921 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada and was a daughter of Frank and Edith Dicker Chapman. Joyce's parents left England for Canada in 1912, they both passed away due to the Spanish flu in 1929 in the same week. Joyce was orphaned at that time at the age of 6 years old and was on her own at the young age of 12 years old. On February 3, 1945 in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada, she married her husband of 37 years, Staff Sergeant Clarence T. Baldwin, while he was stationed there. He predeceased her on March 15, 1982. They moved to the states shortly after their marriage and then to Olean in 1947. Joyce worked at the 40 minute Laundry for 3 years, before going to work at the W.T. Grant's as the manager of the lunch counter for 20 years. She was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church. Joyce volunteered for Meals on Wheels, the Senior League, and many other places in Olean. She also enjoyed traveling to Alberta and British Columbia, Canada many times. Joyce is survived by a beloved son, Gordon H. Baldwin, 2 grandsons, Charles and Edward Baldwin, and several nieces and nephews. Along with her loving husband and parents, Joyce was predeceased by; a son, Dale C. Baldwin in 2013; 2 brothers, William L. Chapman in 2004 and Jasper Chapman in 2002; and a sister, Ann L. Wilson in 2005. Friends will be received on Saturday, December 19, 2020 in the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., 646 East State Street, Olean from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, at which time Funeral and Committal Services will be held.
