Woman allegedly admits to killing Canaseraga man

RICHMOND, Ind. — A New York man killed last week in a city hotel was shot while he slept, according to a court document.

Roy Redford, 58, of Canaseraga, N.Y., was found dead Dec. 14 in his room at the Cozy Garden Inn, which was formally the Econolodge, at 419 Commerce Road. His girlfriend, Josephine Ella Faith Scott, 50, has been arrested in the killing.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office filed a formal murder charge against Scott, and Judge David Kolger found probable cause for the charge exists. Richmond Police Department investigators arrested her Friday in Belmont, N.Y.

Scott admitted to investigators that she shot the sleeping Redford in the back of the head with a .380-caliber revolver, according to an affidavit of probable cause. Scott had denied any involvement in Redford's death until she was undergoing a polygraph examination conducted by a New York State Police investigator.

"I did it," Scott said, according to the affidavit.

When the investigator asked what she did, Scott responded that she killed Redford. She then provided locations of where she hid three wallets belonging to Redford and the revolver. All were found where she described, the affidavit said.

Redford and Scott had been staying in Richmond for more than a month, according to the affidavit. On Dec. 12, Scott drove to their shared home in Canaseraga to pick up her daughter, who was going to help her transport two vehicles back to New York.

After her confession, Scott told RPD investigators that she began thinking about killing Redford on the drive back to New York. She and her daughter arrived in Richmond the afternoon of Dec. 13, and they and Redford took their dogs to Glen Miller Park, ate at Red Lobster and watched "Christmas Vacation" in one of their two hotel rooms, the affidavit said.

When in New York, Scott had retrieved the revolver from a bedroom closet, loaded it and put it in her medicine bag. She told investigators that early Dec. 14 she was sitting at the end of their bed when Redford awoke and asked her if she was all right, according to the affidavit. She told him she was, then waited for him to go back to sleep.

Scott then retrieved the gun and stood behind him before firing one shot into the back of his head, the affidavit said. She then put the gun in a vehicle.

Eventually, Scott and her daughter drove back to New York, and Scott hid the gun in a van belonging to Redford. She also hid the three wallets, according to the affidavit.

When RPD investigators interviewed Scott in New York, several discrepancies were noted from her original story, and Scott agreed to the polygraph test, the affidavit said.

After she admitted responsibility, she was arrested and lodged in a New York jail. The affidavit does not indicate why Scott allegedly decided she wanted to kill Redford.

Redford was found Dec. 14 when his brother requested a welfare check because he had not heard from Redford and Redford had missed work, the affidavit said. An autopsy revealed the small-caliber, close-range gunshot wound to the back of his head.
