Andover Police Department approved for limited expansion of jurisdiction

The Village of Andover police department has a broader territory to cover now. Recently, the local governments authorized the police department to begin providing some limited coverage in the Town of Andover. Police Chief Jim Rumfelt told Wellsville Regional News (WRN) that "we have a very limited patrol in the town now." Chief Rumfelt added that "basically the State Police are the 'primary' but if for some reason they are not available we have jurisdiction and will cover. We also do a limited number of speed details for now." The plan essentially permits the village force to handle (primarily emergency calls) outside the village when troopers have an extended response time due to various factors. One family that lives outside the village told WRN they hope the move will cut down on the speeders on County Road 12 (Alfred-Elm Valley Road).
In other criminal justice news from the village of Andover, Acting Village Justice Jim Ames submitted his resignation to the village board. Steve Heckman remains the primary and elected Justice in the village.
