Bolivar-Richburg Central School (BRCS) inducted seven new members into their National Honor Society on Wednesday, December 2. Inductees included Sarah Clark, Brennen Gilliland, Jason Greeson, Allyson Hebert, Madysen Johnson, Emma Murphy and Paige Taylor.
Eric Baldwin, NHS advisor, led the students in the NHS pledge and shared his congratulations, “membership in the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors awarded to a high school student. Let me be among the first to say congratulations on a job well done!”
BRCS Superintendent Michael Retzlaff, Middle/High School Principal Daniel Quartley, and Assistant Principal Mary Snyder congratulated each new inductee with their NHS pins and certificates.
Sarah Clark was the evening’s first inductee. Sarah is an active participant in the BRCS music and theatre programs. She has also participated in Ecology Club, Science Club and Language Club. Her involvement extends into the community with the Olean Theatre Workshop and as head altar server at St. Mary’s Church.
Brennen Gilliland is a member of the BRCS golf team and has also been involved in Science Club. He has volunteered for the SPCA and participated in several benefit walks for Suicide prevention and Multiple Sclerosis. Brennen has also served as a tutor for students in need of academic help.
Jason Greeson has played three sports at BRCS: soccer, basketball and track. He has been involved in his church, Crosstown Alliance, serving as team leader and small group leader at camp, as well as planning activities and games for the KidZone fall festival.
Allyson Hebert has participated in track, orchestra, Language Club and Science Club at BRCS. She has held jobs at two local restaurants and was also nominated for Girls State and selected for area all-state in orchestra.
Madysen Johnson served as vice president of her class for grades 9 through 11. She has been active in Language Club, was selected as first chair viola in orchestra, and played JV soccer and track. She has volunteered at the Richburg Colonial Library and the Allegany County SPCA and has gained work experience at Sprague’s and CafĂ© Jacob.
Emma Murphy has played volleyball at BRCS and the club level. She has been a member of Science Club and Language Club, and was selected for area all state orchestra as a freshman. She has also worked as a junior counselor at Gils Hills summer camp and helped set up for the Community Easter Egg Hunt.
The final inductee was Paige Taylor. Paige has played goalie for the BRCS girls varsity soccer team since sophomore year. She has also participated in orchestra, Science Club and Ski Club. She has volunteered at the NYSSMA Solo Festival and taught younger kids how to make pottery at the Maker’s Fair in Wellsville.
Each year’s inductees are asked to dedicate a floral wreath to a member of the school community who demonstrates the ideals of scholarship, character, leadership and service. This year’s selection was Middle/High School Principal, Daniel Quartley. Newly inducted NHS member Paige Taylor read a citation for Mr. Quartley: “You have had a tremendous impact on our lives here at BRCS, whether it be as a friendly face in the hallway, the person who welcomes us to school assemblies, the voice on the walkie talkie making sure we made it out of the building safely during safety drills, a cheerleader at school events, and so much more. We thank you for all that you do to serve as an example and role model to the students of BRCS.”
BRCS students are considered for NHS based on holding a 91% average or higher at the end of the second marking period. High School faculty members evaluate the character, service and leadership qualities of each eligible student, as well as their extracurricular involvement and an essay describing what the word “character” means to them.
