Obituary: Richard W. "Steve" Chapell, 93, Sweden Valley, PA


Richard W. “Steve” Chapell  “beloved father and grandfather”
SWEDEN VALLEY, PA---Richard W. “Steve” Chapell, 93, a lifelong resident of Sweden Valley, passed away in his home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, July 6, 2017, after a period of declining health.
Born on September 1, 1923 in Blackwell, he was a son of Claytey and Bertha Brown Chapell.  In 1947 in Sweden Valley, he married Gloria J. Osborne, who passed away on August 29, 2010.
Richard attended Coudersport High School.  He was a U.S. Army veteran, having proudly served during World War II, attaining the rank of staff sergeant.
He was a long time employee of the former Pittsburgh-Corning Corporation in Port Allegany, retiring after 40 years of service.
Richard was a life member of Potter Post 192 American Legion in Coudersport.  He loved to fish.  His greatest love was his family and enjoying a few beers.
Surviving are three children, Richard E. “Dick” (Georgeanna) Chapell, Jean C. (Ron “Fezz”) Linden, and Roger W. (Jessie) Chapell, all of Sweden Valley; fifteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild to be born soon; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Richard was predeceased by a son, Ronald E. Chapell; two brothers; and a sister.
In keeping with Richard’s wishes, there will be no public visitation or funeral services.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2017 beginning at 3pm at “the Flats” in Sweden Valley.  Friends are invited to bring a dish to pass. Meat will be provided.

Richard’s family has entrusted his care to the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse.
