Media news: Daily Reporter, Evening Tribune score awards

ALBANY — A banner year continues for the Hornell Evening Tribune, as the newspaper won four more state awards in Albany and has won nine major awards this year.
At the New York News Publisher’s Association annual awards banquet, seven reporters were honored as the Tribune won for Distinguished Business Reporting, Distinguished News Supplement, Distinguished Sports Writing and Distinguished Live Sports Coverage.
In the four categories, nine reporters were honored for first-place awards.
The work by the news department on Alstom’s $2.5 billion contract with Amtrak to build its new line of Acela high-speed trains in the Spectator won first-place for Distinguished Business reporting. Jason Jordan, Neal Simon, John Anderson, Brian Quinn and Ryan Papaserge were honored for their work.
The Back to the Future Progress Edition, which highlighted local businesses and the Main Street district won first place for Distinguished News Suppliment. Jordan, Anderson, Quinn, Jasmine Willis and Kathryn Ross were honored in that category.
Chris Potter, the regional sports editor, won first place in Distinguished Sports Coverage for his Section V basketball coverage.
Anderson won first place in Distinguished Sports Writing for his feature, “Julio walks on the football field again,” which told the story of a paralyzed Alfred University football player who was able to walk on the field for a coin flip and honorary captain.

The Tribune has now earned 10 state awards in 2017, including three awards from the New York Press Association earlier this year for The Spectator Great 8 (first place for Best Special Section and Niche Publication), the I-86 Travel Guides won second place in the Magazine Division and a third place for Innovative Ad Project for the Class of 2016.
Simon has previously won national awards for his work on the opinion page and his Sunday columns and won a state award for his government coverage while Anderson is a two-time Gatehouse Media national columnist of the year.
This is the second straight year Jordan has been honored by the publisher’s association with a first-place award.
