Bath Vol. Fire Department structure fire press release

On Saturday July 27th at 9:41 am The Bath Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to101 West Washington  Street in the Village of Bath for a possible structure fire with reports of black smoke coming from a window.

Assistant Chief Curtis Wininger was first on scene and reported a working structure fire in a multi-family 2 story apartment building and requested a second alarm. Bath Village Police had checked the apartment and said the occupants were out and that a bedroom was on fire.

The Bath Village Police and a Steuben County Sheriff Deputy continued to evacuate the remaining apartments while firefighters from Bath and Bath VA fire attacked the fire. The quick response from both departments along with a rapid interior attack, knocked down the blaze quickly. The remaining units that were requested on the second alarm were then recalled. The fire was held at the original apartment with no fire extension to other apartments.

The Bath Fire Department investigated the cause of the fire and determined that a charging Lithium battery pack overheated and started the fire. There was extensive damage to the apartment and The Steuben Area Red Cross was called to aid the one occupant of that apartment.

The fire was called under control by Bath Chief Mike Fiordo at 10:03 and all units cleared the scene and were back in service at 11:16.
