Resident comes home and finds a person sleeping in her child’s bed in the Town of Bath

PRESS RELEASE:
In the early morning hours of Saturday August 3rd, Steuben County 911 dispatched New York State Police to 6752 County Route 10 in the Town of Bath, for a report of a burglary in progress. A man located at the dwelling, Matthew Root, age 27 of Bath, told State Police that he had permission from the person who rents the apartment to sleep there as long as he did the dishes.  Root was unable to show police a key to the apartment. The renter of the apartment was at the Village of Bath PD reporting the intruder and stated she had not given anyone permission to use her apartment. When she arrived home that evening she found the front door jammed and once inside found Root in one of her children’s beds sleeping. There was damage to the front door jam and to a television. Root denied having caused any damage and told State Police that it was probably caused by law enforcement that had arrested Root earlier in the day for trespassing. Root was arrested by New York State Police for Criminal Trespass, Criminal Mischief in the 3rd & 4th degrees for the damage he caused. He was sent to the Steuben County Jail.
