Obituary: Dr. Janet Whelpley, 61, formerly of Wellsville

Dr. Janet Whelpley Obituary

Dr. Janet K. Whelpley went to heaven on December 27, 2023, to be with her parents and brothers.

Janet was born on October 22, 1962, to Robert and Agatha Whelpley in Wellsville, New York. She loved all animals from a very early age, it quickly became her life passion.

Janet was a former member of 4-H, who exhibited her Black Angus cattle at both the Allegany County Fair and New York State Fair.  Janet also raised vegetables to exhibit at the county fair.  As she grew older, Janet began her career by working for Dr. Doty a Veterinarian in Wellsville, first as a volunteer, and then as an assistant caring for the animals.  This exposure led her to getting a Bachelor of Science degree from Alfred University.  With limited access to veterinary schools in the United States, Janet pushed forward with her dream and went to Italy for her doctorate.  She learned to be fluent in Italian and earned her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine after a few years.

Upon returning to the United States, Janet quickly worked for several veterinarian services in central New York while studying for her boards.  She settled in the Syracuse area, but her health issues prevented her from taking those exams and eventually caused her to give up the demands of working in a veterinary clinic.  Janet then turned to helping people by running a computer clinic at her church in downtown Syracuse, that focused on recent immigrants to the US who needed to learn these basic skills.  Janet wanted to help others.

Janet is survived by her brothers Dr. Robert (Joan) Whelpley of Almond, John (Karen) Whelpley of Olean, sister-in-law, Debby Whelpley of Sackets Harbor, and several nieces and nephews.  She also leaves behind a dear friend, Donna Siefer of Rome, NY.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Dennis (Debby) Whelpley of Sacketts Harbor, NY and David Whelpley of Wellsville, NY.

At this time there will be no visitations and the family will be conducting a private service in the future.  With Janet’s love of animals, the family ask that donations be made to SPCA’s or animal shelters of the donor’s choice or the Allegany Education Center 5435 A County Rt. 46 Belmont NY 14813 for the 4-H program.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 1303 E. State St., Olean.
