Two major manufacturers in Allegany County are faltering...retailer Kmart said goodbye this year...and yet sales tax collections are UP over last year! It's not a huge increase, but given the challenges, a financial report that shows black ink instead of red is always encouraging. Allegany County Treasurer Terri Ross tells us that, as of today, sales tax collections are up about $45,000 over last year. While not significant...a win is a win. Ross speculated that gasoline prices rose and generated additional tax money, as did utilities.
The county so far this year has taken three hits, the worst in mid July of $117,000.
