NYSDOT ANNOUNCES PAVING OF INTERSTATE
86 FROM EXIT 31 IN ANGELICA TO EXIT 34 IN HORNELL
$9.5 Million Maintenance Paving to be
Completed in 2018
Investment Complements “Southern Tier
Soaring” - The Region’s Comprehensive Strategy to Revitalize Communities and
Grow the Economy
New York
State Department of Transportation Acting Commissioner Paul Karas today
announced that maintenance paving work will begin in mid-June, on Interstate 86
between Exit 31 at Angelica in Allegany County and Exit 34 at Hornell in
Steuben County.
Interstate 86
is the gateway through the Southern Tier. This project will assure safe
and efficient travel to the thousands who visit the Allegany County Fair in
Angelica, colleges like those in Alfred and health care facilities like the new
hospital under construction in Hornell. At the eastern end of this
project, tourists can get off the Interstate and start hiking on the Finger
Lakes Trail.
New York
State Department of Transportation Acting Commissioner Paul A. Karas said, "Continued investment in this
region’s infrastructure is an investment in its business and agriculture
industries. Governor Cuomo recognizes the impact of these investments and their
contribution to local economy. This project will preserve an important route
for agricultural products grown and produced in the Southern Tier, while
providing continued safe travel through one of New York State’s most
picturesque regions."
This $9.5
million project will address pavement deterioration by restoring the pavement
surface to a smooth condition. The mainline travel lanes and shoulders
will be overlaid with 1.5 inches of new asphalt pavement. Prior to placing the
new pavement, preparatory work on the existing pavement will be completed. This
work includes removing and patching bad areas and saw cutting the underlying concrete
pavement. Saw cutting helps to relieve stresses in the pavement that leads to
premature cracking of the newly placed pavement. In addition, roadside
guiderail and reflectors will be replaced and upgraded to improve the overall
safety of the Interstate. Finally, the ramps at the interchanges and a portion
of Karr Valley Road at Exit 32 will be resurfaced to restore them to excellent
condition. Work will be completed by Dolomite/A.L. Blades, out of Hornell,
NY. Project completion is targeted for October 2018.
Maintenance paving is the most cost-effective approach to
keep New York’s highways in a state of good repair, and this investment delays
the need for more costly, in-depth repairs in the future. The repair and
modernization of our state’s transportation infrastructure will improve safety
and ensure that state and local communities remain economically
competitive.
Consistent
with Governor Cuomo’s Drivers First initiative, the project has been designed
to minimize impacts to expressway traffic. At least one lane of traffic will be
maintained on the mainlines throughout construction of the project.
