Families struggling to get by in the Canaseraga
area can find some blessings that will help all in one place.
SUNY Empire State
Leadership Team agrees that blessings come in all shapes and sizes and for them
a "Community Cupboard" filled with food items as well as small
toiletries available to any and all who need it made perfect sense to fulfill
their Social Action Project Requirement. The concept is simple. The box is a miniature
food pantry, receiving items from those who want to donate, and offering it to
those who need them.
Locations
Whether you're taking or giving, you can just
go to the Community Cupboard, There's not a lock on it, it's open 24 hours a
day, seven days a week.
The box itself is for the community and it's sustained by
the community, We try and put stuff in there that makes sense, toothpaste,
toothbrushes, band aids, some soap and shampoo.
We don't know who uses it, sometimes people feel like they
are embarrassed to use the box in the middle of the day. However, there is no
question the box is filling a need.
Plans to install more blessing boxes are under way to further
provide for the many that struggle to make ends meet throughout the area.
Currently the ESC Team of Superstars have launched sites in Canaseraga at The
Master’s Tabernacle on North Church Street and in two locations in Elmira.
We’ve gotten a couple of requests from people around other
communities for boxes for their property, with any luck, we'll have a few
around where people can be made aware of them and make use of them.
We hope that this Community Cupboard can help create an
atmosphere of support and generosity. We think the
World of our community and we need more kindness and this is kind of anonymous
kindness everyone should be doing: if you have it you leave it, if you need it
you take it.
