HOUGHTON, NY - Anne Young, equestrian program director and assistant professor of sport, recreation, and wellness management at Houghton College, was featured in the Certified Horsemanship Association’s (CHA) The Equine Professional Manual: The Art of Teaching Riding which was recently honored with an American Horse Publications award.
The manual, published in celebration of CHA’s 50th anniversary, received second place at the 2017 American Horse Publications’ Equine Media Awards. This 208-page handbook is the quintessential publication for riding instructors – regardless of teaching level – and covers the topics of riding programming, techniques, students, communication, risk and horse management, and more. Young was one of 34 industry experts from across the United States and Canada whose contribution was included.
“When I first became acquainted with CHA in 1987 at my first clinic, I thought that the CHA instructor and trail guide manual was the best and most useful book about how to become a safe, effective teacher I had ever seen,” remarks Young. “I am honored to have been part of the group of professional riding instructors who worked together to revise and update that manual to be even more user-friendly and effective than the original version.”
Earlier this year, Young received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York State Horse Council for her leadership, dedication, and achievements in the equine industry. Houghton's equestrian program has grown exponentially since Young took over directorship in 1986, drawing students from as far as California, Washington, and Colorado. Additionally, the college's facility was named one of the 20 Most Amazing College Equestrian Centers in the country by Best Value Schools, alongside major universities such as Michigan State, Penn State, Stanford, and Kentucky.
