HOUGHTON, NY - July 12, 2017 - Sylvia Morrow, a 2015 physics and writing graduate of Houghton, was recently named a 2017 American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellow.
Morrow is a second-year doctoral student at Vanderbilt University and one of only 20 individuals nationwide chosen for this opportunity. Sponsored by the American Physical Society, this 10-week fellowship merges two important aspects of Morrow’s life: physics and writing. She is serving as a contributor at Discover magazine, a leading science and technology publication, collaborating with media professionals to make scientific articles and ideas more accessible to the general public.
Now Morrow employs an interdisciplinary approach by drawing on both majors for topics such as how fetuses respond to or recognize face-shaped light signals, how the structure and fabrication of moth eyes are helping researchers develop a better touch screen, and a curious dinosaur fossil in Alberta, Canada, that has received much attention due to its extensively intact state, including valuable soft tissue.
Morrow puts her writing background to work with each article, sorting through information to convey just the right word, phrase, or concept. For her, it’s all about “making sure you understand who your audience is, what kinds of things they want to hear about, and tying new science results together with things going on in people’s everyday lives.”
