Steuben Deputies commended for actions at serious crash scene

Shutt, Logsdon
BATH – Two Steuben County deputies were commended for their actions following the May 17 pick-up truck-vehicle accident on Interstate-86 which resulted in serious injuries for a local state trooper. County Sgt. Shawn Shutt witnessed the accident which occurred around 4:45 p.m. when a pick-up truck slammed into the back of a state police vehicle parked on the side of the road during a traffic stop east of the Campbell rest area, according to county Sheriff Jim Allard. The first on the scene, Shutt immediately positioned his vehicle behind the wreckage and rendered assistance to the critically injured state trooper, Craig Foglia. Shutt assessed the chaotic scene, which included a second vehicle accident in the west bound lane of I-86, called for additional resources and continued medical assistance for Foglia. "An already stressful situation was complicated by the fact you knew Foglia, in fact your careers have run basically parallel since you both started," Allard told Shutt in a presentation Monday before the county Legislature’s Public Safety and Corrections Committee. "I also have received a letter from the Superintendent of the New York State Police stating your swift action may have saved Foglia’s life." Shutt was ably assisted at the scene by Sgt. Brian Logsdon, who responded, also assessed the situation, calling in and directing additional resources and providing effective radio communication between responders. Allard said both men showed the professionalism, commitment to duty and principles the county Sheriff’s department prides itself in.
