What is SBIRT?
SBIRT is a comprehensive, integrated, public health approach to the delivery of early intervention and treatment services for persons with substance use disorders, as well as those who are at risk of developing these disorders. SBIRT is ranked in the top five cost-effective preventive services.  Primary care centers, dental clinics, public health clinics, hospital emergency rooms, trauma centers, school-based health centers, and other community settings provide opportunities for early intervention with at-risk substance users before more severe consequences occur.
· Screening quickly assesses the severity of substance use and identifies the appropriate level of treatment.
· Brief intervention focuses on increasing insight and awareness regarding substance use and motivation toward behavioral change.
· Referral to treatment provides those identified as needing more extensive treatment with access to specialty care.

Why is SBIRT Important?
SBIRT is effective. More than screening, SBIRT is an effective tool for identifying risk behaviors and providing appropriate intervention. SBIRT incorporates screening for all types of substance use with brief, tailored feedback and advice. The tool can be performed in a variety of settings and the screening does not have to be performed by a physician. Simple feedback on risky behavior can be one of the most important influences on patient behavior and change. SBIRT is so important that reimbursement for screening and brief intervention is available through most commercial insurers and Medicaid.
