Wellsville: "Tanbark City"

Shown here are Jim Raptis and Mark Finn of the Lions Club
From the Wellsville Historical Society
Thank You Wellsville Lions Club for our newest Historic Marker. This marker commemorates an old nickname for our village. Hemlock bark was placed in huge piles resembling barns or houses as it awaited processing. Visitors were struck by the fact that it looked like a city made of bark. Tanbark City became synonymous with the name Wellsville in many area newspapers.
