April 11, 2024Dear Editor:
In a now retracted statement issued April 5, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. expressed that although he hadn’t examined all evidence, he had been told by “reasonable people” that "the [January 6th] protesters had no weapons" and that the protestors had neither planned to nor had the ability to seize power over our government. Among those counted as reasonable people: Donald Trump.
The edited statement sought to clarify RFK, Jr.’s views on the events that he and other conservatives refer to as a protest, a riot, but not a “true insurrection.” He straddles the aisle once more saying, “One can, as I do, oppose Donald Trump and all he stands for, and still be disturbed by the weaponization of government against him.” That’s an interesting position to take for a presidential hopeful whose campaign state director in New York (Rita Palma) has been working to get on the ballot in the Empire State to help “get rid of Biden” furthering that “the only way that Trump can even [have a] remote possibility of taking New York is if Bobby is on the ballot.”
For those voters who might be apathetic, disillusioned, or undecided, doesn’t RFK, Jr. sound a bit like Trump’s reluctant wingman? Are the Independent or Moderate voters of New York willing to “get rid of Biden” even if it means the result may threaten democracy and inspire further domestic terrorism veiled as patriotism? Or are the anxious or disenfranchised going to choose civic participation — maybe even for the first time — to make sure that doesn’t happen?
