At the most recent meeting of the Wellsville Board of
Education a winter sports schedule was approved for boys’ and girls’ basketball
and volleyball. Now why that may not be in the same league as the Buffalo
Bills, if you have a son or daughter, niece, nephew, grandson, or
granddaughter, it is at least just as important to watch. But along with its
approval, the board of Ed squelched any in-person cheering at games. Not even
two supporters are allowed.
Superintendent David Foster said, “Although the New York
State Athletics Board recommends two spectators per athlete, I’m recommending
no spectators.”
He went onto say that “to have a spectator test positive for
the coronavirus could have a devastating impact on the season.”
However, Wellsville High School sports enthusiasts due have
another avenue for viewing games.
According to Foster and Athletic Director Erika Aftuck the
games will be streamed online from the Wellsville School District website under
athletics while the games are ongoing. The only games that won’t be streamed
are senior (high school) nights when the graduating senior athletes will be
able to have two spectators at the games.
Wellsville’s season will get underway Feb. 8th when the basketball
teams will play arch-rival Hornell’s Red Raiders in the Lion’s den. Check out
the school website for times and connectivity. On Feb. 9th, Girls Basketball
against- Bolivar-Richburg and Boys Volleyball against Scio will be
live-streamed.
This year the Wellsville teams are playing in the Allegany
County League.
“I encourage everyone to look at the website,” Foster said.
