National Ski Patrol seeking new First Aid Volunteers as skiing gains in popularity

More people are playing in the snow at Swain Ski and Snowboard Center this season. Natural snowfall and man-made snowmaking have given skiers the best conditions in recent years.  Recreational skiing and snowboarding can easily be pursued while also maintaining safe social distancing.

Swain Ski Patrol, the safety and first aid volunteers at Swain, will be hosting an Open House on Saturday February 20. Many of the best skiers on the hill belong to the National Ski Patrol. This esteemed national organization was formed in the 1930s to serve the recreational ski industry. The Swain Ski Patrol is seeking new members. Participation in the open house, that includes a free one day lift pass, is by no means an obligation to join Ski Patrol. It is a chance for skiers and snow boarders to have a close up look as to what the men and women in the red coats do.

Suzy Male, Swain Marketing Director, says, “Despite a global pandemic, we have seen huge increases in guest participation. There has been a 50% lift in new skiers engaging with the sport as well as seasoned vets rediscovering our little corner of Allegany County."

Also commenting Swain Resort co-owner Celeste Schoonover adds, "This has been an unprecedented year for all ski areas. We have done our best to keep our trails in top condition for our skiers and riders and our lodge well maintained. We're happy to report that due to the size and spread of our acreage, we have not been forced to require advanced reservations for lift tickets and our lodge has remained open to guests. The Shawmut Grille and Mercer's Cafeteria have continued to serve customers throughout the pandemic. Our staff, ski patrol, and instructors have remained vigilant and committed to the health and safety of our guests, as well as to their enjoyment of our resort.”   With 35 trails over 120 acres there is plenty of room to spread out at Swain.

To reserve a spot in the open house, or any inquiries about joining Ski Patrol, contact Swain Ski Patrol membership coordinator Steve Walker at 607-382-3195 or by emailing membership@swainskipatrol.org.  Participation is limited. A second open house may be scheduled for March.
