Alfred University graduate student earns recognition from American Ceramic Society

ALFRED, NY—The American Ceramic Society (ACerS) recently honored Iva Milisavljevic, a doctoral student in ceramic engineering at Alfred University. The Basic Science Division of ACerS presented Milisavljevic with a Graduate Excellence in Materials Science (GEMS) Diamond Award during the Materials Science and Technology (MS&T) 2020 Conference.

The GEMS awards recognize the outstanding achievements of graduate students in Materials Science and Engineering. It is open to all graduate students who make an oral presentation in any symposium or session at the MS&T Conference. The 2020 conference was held in November.

Milisavljevic is in her fourth year in the ceramic engineering doctoral program and is a student of Yiquan Wu, professor of materials science and engineering at Alfred University. One of four finalists for GEMS honors, she received the Diamond Award after delivering her oral presentation titled “Solid-state single crystal growth of YAG by SPS sintering.” The other three finalists earned Sapphire Awards.

Winners of the GEMS awards are chosen based upon the scientific and academic accomplishments of the student, the quality of the research presented, and the quality of the oral presentation.

The mission of ACerS is to advance the study, understanding, and use of ceramics and related materials. More than 11,000 scientists, engineers, researchers, manufacturers, plant personnel, educators, students, marketing and sales professionals from more than 70 countries make up the members of The American Ceramic Society. Candidates for the GEMS awards span the globe. In addition to Milisavljevic, two of the 2020 finalists were from Germany (University of Darmstadt and University of Klobenz), while the fourth was from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
