The Allegany County Sheriff's race is...fascinating!

I may not always agree, but one thing is for sure...the Republican party in Allegany  County is organized and members follow the rules...until this year. It's rare, very rare to have a political primary in the county, especially a Republican primary. So it is fascinating to see two strong Republicans battle for the office of Sheriff. Rick Whitney is the incumbent. He is being challenged by former state trooper and a guy who easily makes headlines - Walt Mackney. I know both. I like both. Hmm.
As is sometimes the case, a political primary in Allegany County often times seals the deal. If no other party challenges, in this case, who ever wins the primary, wins the election...even though many residents will never have a chance to vote. It's the system. I've always been told, via a political science degree at Alfred University and from really smart street people, candidates are foolish if they don't secure another party line. I've often passed this wisdom on to candidates, but they rarely listen (often times, because they won).
Wellsville Regional News reached out to both Sheriff Whitney and candidate Mackney to see if they would seek alternate ballot lines. To date, the Sheriff has not replied. Candidate Mackney had this to say - "My committee approached the Chairman of the Conservative Party in Allegany County, Nick Jonas, who declined to allow us to petition to be on the ballot on the Conservative line. We have not approached any other parties at this time but are always considering our options.. I strongly believe that I will win the Republican primary and that the strength of the Republican Party in Allegany County will carry me through the general election."
There is merit to seeking an alternate line. For example, a Democrat may like a GOP candidate, but, for some reason, won't 'pull the Republican level.' However, if that candidate opts for an independent line, he/she could pick up some extra votes.
Case in point...a few years back, Susan Goetschius ran on the "Brighter Futures" independent line and won the position of Wellsville Mayor. It was the first time a third party candidate won an election in Allegany County's largest village.
Allegany County will be well served under Whitney or Mackney...the politics, however, is amazing! Sorry guys...you have several more weeks of smiling and dealing with the likes of...well, me.
