Quick Center honors high school artists

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y., March 19, 2018 - The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure University honored 93 young, local artists at the center’s annual High School Juried Art Exhibition March 14. Works were selected for the exhibition from 300 submissions after an extensive jurying process by professional judges.

Participating schools included Allegany-Limestone, Andover, Austin, Belfast, Bolivar-Richburg, BOCES, Cassadaga Valley, Cattaraugus-Little Valley, Coudersport, Ellicottville, Falconer, Franklinville, home schools, Jamestown, New Life Christian School, Olean, Oswayo, Otto Eldred, Pioneer, Portville, Randolph, Salamanca, Southwestern, Wellsville, and West Valley.

Winners, their families and friends, were honored with an exhibition opening and reception.
In addition to their works being selected for exhibition at the Quick Center, Ludwig Brunner, executive director of the Quick Center, presented four students with best of category awards:
  • Best of Drawing, Nicholas Tillinghast, ninth grade, Pioneer High School (art teacher: Scott Losi) for his charcoal drawing “Child Study;”
  • Best of Painting, Michelle Wohlers, 12th grade, Allegany-Limestone Central School (art teacher: Theresa Heinz) for her oil painting “Fern Field;”
  • Best of Photography / Digital Art, Hannah Ekstrom, 12th grade, Southwestern High School (art teacher: Mark Kirsch) for her photograph “Aversion;” and
  • Best of Sculpture / Ceramics, Lead Sims, 10th grade, Pioneer High School (art teacher: Scott Losi) for her sculpture “Habitat.”
 
Bernard Valento, vice president for enrollment at the university, presented three students with St. Bonaventure “Best in Show” awards. Each award included a $1,000 scholarship to attend St. Bonaventure University, a professional artist portfolio, and art supplies to help the students continue their artistic endeavors.
The winning students are:
  • Emmeline Meyers, 12th grade, Southwestern High School (art teacher: Jenney Brown) for her oil pastel drawing “Tropical Breeze;”
  • Nathan Dash, 11th grade, West Valley High School (art teacher: Hannah Mazzuto) for his cut paper, ink & marker work “Identity Crisis;” and
  • Emily Schroder, 12th grade, Cattaraugus-Little Valley Central School (art teacher: Carol Purdy) for her charcoal drawing “The Seventh Symphony.”
The winning works of art will remain on view on the mezzanine of the Quick Center through Sunday, April 8. The Quick Center is open Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Holiday hours vary.
