ALBANY, NY – State Senator Cathy Young, who describes herself as a frequent rider of the New York City subway system, talked yesterday about crime on the subways with MTA Chairman Joe Lhota. “Unfortunately, I’ve seen people with severe mental illness, acting out, decompensating,” said Sen. Young. “I’ve seen panhandlers that are demanding money from people, and it makes for a very uncomfortable experience.” The senator also said that while there are cameras, there are not any police officers at the scene, when she has seen these incidents take place. MTA Chairman Joe Lhota answered that the senator is correct, that more of an NYPD presence is needed on subways.
