Cattaraugus County: Man accused of failing to care for 72 pigs

Press Release:
The Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Office reports the arrest of Gerald Nason Jr. of Ashford after an arrest warrant was issued. Nason is accused of violating Agriculture and Market Laws. He is accused of cruelty to animals after he allegedly neglected to care for 72 pigs on his property located at 5119 Folts Rd. and on a neighboring property at 5109 Folts Rd in Ashford, NY. The Sheriff reports that based on an investigation by the SPCA and the Sheriff's Office, Nason is accused of failing to provide sufficient food, an abundant source of clean water and sufficient space in a shelter for these pigs. Mr. Nason Jr. is also accused of neglecting to seek necessary medical treatment for most of these pigs. The SPCA and Sheriff's Office obtained an emergency seizure of the pigs to remove them from the farm and to get them into medical care. The pigs in the worst medical condition were removed and taken to receive medical care at Cornell University by Farm Sanctuary of Watkins Glen, NY. The rest of the pigs will be removed from the property to local rescue farms.
This investigation has been ongoing since early January. The SPCA and the Sheriff's Office received many complaints from residents in the area about the care of the pigs. The Sheriff's Office and SPCA will continue to work diligently with the DA's Office to ensure that all animal cruelty cases in the county are investigated to full extent. The Sheriff's Office reminds the public to check the Animal Abuser Registry portion of their webpage at http://www.cattco.org/sheriffs-office/animal-abuser-registry.
