Obituary: Former Andover/Hornell police officer dies at age 54

HORNELL – Paul K. “Cap” Capluzzi, 54, passed away Wednesday (Dec. 18, 2024) at his home in Hornell after a long illness.

Born in Hornell on Dec. 26, 1969 he was a son of the late James and Patricia (Crowe) Capluzzi. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by two brothers, James Capluzzi, Jr. and Matthew Capluzzi.

A graduate of Hornell High School, Paul received an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Corning Community College and began his career in law enforcement in Andover, NY and later in Hornell. Following his employment as a police officer, he became employed by the City of Hornell Department of Public Works (DPW). After receiving his teaching certification from Buffalo State College, he was employed by GST BOCES as a criminal justice instructor before he retired.

An avid Cleveland Browns and NY Yankee fan, Paul enjoyed gardening, landscaping and building houses and he especially loved to cook pasta and sauce. Throughout the years he coached Little League and served as President and coached Maple City Girl’s Softball for 15 years.

He is lovingly survived by four daughters, Brandy Capluzzi of Smithfield, NC, Amanda Witter of Hornell, Emily (Branden) Mulhollen and Allison Capluzzi all of Corning, NY; his three nephews, who were like sons to him, Justin, Ben and James Brown all of Hornell; six grandchildren, Chesney Lee, Ethan, Jayden, Brayden Dieter, Colson Capluzzi and Mackenzie Brown; one sister, Vicki Hallett of Hornell; one brother, Joseph (Heather) Capluzzi and their two daughters, Lauren (Kody) Rowland and Alyssa Capluzzi; also his lifelong best friend, Todd Edington of Middleboro, MA; and “man’s best friend” his beloved dog, Duke’ as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

Calling hours are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. SATURDAY (JAN. 4, 2025) at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home, 285 Main St., Hornell where a funeral service will take place in his memory at 1 p.m. Saturday with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to either Maple City Softball or the Hornell Area Humane Society.
