Alfred Town Board: Solar law, sidewalk, state cuts, and more

ALFRED TOWN TALK
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SEPTEMBER 10, 2020 TOWN BOARD MEETING
Dan Acton, Supervisor
Solar law, Sidewalk, State cuts, and more

Many issues came before the town board as they once again met in hybrid fashion due to the COVID-19 pandemic. First was the public hearing on the proposed Solar Law. In the absence of objections from the community the board proceeded to adopt the law unanimously.

Next was a presentation by representatives of Clark Patterson Lee who are engineers for the sidewalk grant. Whereas the committee comprised of village, town, university, and state college representatives had discarded the idea of a sidewalk running from the village to Alfred Station, the engineers proposed a sidewalk from the village to Dollar General. This was presented using preliminary drawings which are now in the town board room for the public to view. The board will seek input from the community before making any decision on this project.

There followed a discussion about the perpetual lawn sale on State Route 21 and the camping trailer parked along East Valley Road. The board authorized the Code Enforcement Officer to contact the town attorney to deal with these long-standing problems.

Highway Superintendent Bob Halsey reported that the state has withheld 20% of our highway funding. We anticipate a similar reduction in state aid and, both reductions may continue into next year. This will require a reduction in this year’s expenditures as well as a reduction in next year’s budget.

In response to a letter from Fred Sinclair and recommendation from planning board member Bill Dailey the board agreed to request information from NYSEG regarding frequencies that will be coming out of the tower antennas they plan to build. This will be requested by our town attorney.

Finally, the board resolved to sell 30 acres owned on Hamilton Hill Road near the railroad. The idea is to put the proceeds toward construction of a cold storage building that would allow the town to keep all equipment out of the weather.
