Allegany County: Former Chairman of the Board Delores Cross was "a grand lady"

Allegany County has lost another great leader. Delores Cross from Cuba, NY, was an outstanding citizen, not just for Cuba, but for the entire County and region as well. From her support of the Cuba Hospital Auxiliary, Current Topic Club, Cuba Circulating Library, Chairing the Cuba Bicentennial Commission, and special recognition of her achievements by the Cuba Chamber of Commerce, Delores certainly touched the hearts of those from Cuba. Beyond the Cuba town lines, her leadership and dedication is recognized and fondly remembered as well. Delores was elected to the Allegany County Board of Legislators in the fall of 1981 and she continued as Legislator until 1994. She was Chairman of the Board of Legislators in 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1993, the first female to serve in this leadership role as the Chief Elected Official for our County. In addition, she served as Chairman of the Planning & Historical Committee which under her direction produced the first Travel Guide for Allegany County. Delores also served on the Ways, Means & Finance, County Owned Property, Natural Resources, Rules & Legislation, and Resource Development standing committees, as well as the Planning Board, Youth Board, Jury Board, and the Medical Scholarship Board. Delores took an active role in the establishment of Allegany County’s Office of Economic Development and was appointed by the Governor of New York State to the Western New York Regional Economic Development Council. As Chairman of the Board of Legislators, Delores saw the need for a full-time County Administrator to oversee the day-to-day operations of County government and it was under her watch and leadership that this position was established by Local Law No. 3 of 1992.

Delores Cross was a grand lady who represented herself and us very well. She helped guide the County and set in motion standards that we use today. She and her leadership will be missed but will forever be a positive part of our Allegany County history book.

Delores Cross, we thank you for your service to Allegany County.

Respectfully,
Curt Crandall, Chairman
Allegany County Board of Legislators
