Alfred “Dennis” Hathaway “beloved father, brother, grandfather, and
companion”
SALAMANCA, N.Y. - Alfred “Dennis” Hathaway, 69, of
Salamanca, formerly of Eldred, Pa., passed away surrounded by his loving family
on Sunday, February 11, 2018, in Olean General Hospital, Olean, after a long
illness.
Born on January7, 1949 in Olean, he was a son of Alfred
Lewis and Theo G. Schoonover Hathaway.
Dennis attended Oswayo Valley High School in Shinglehouse,
Pa. and was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Vietnam War as a radio
technician. Dennis received a Purple
Heart for injuries received during the war.
He was employed as a truck driver for most of his life and
had previously been employed at the former Nicholas Radio and TV Repair in
Westons Mills. He worked lastly at the
Gowanda Hospital in the maintenance department until being forced to retire
from injuries sustained in a work related accident.
Dennis enjoyed collecting old coins and currency. He enjoyed buying old riding mowers,
repairing and then selling the mowers. He was an avid fisherman and hunter.
Surviving are his longtime companion, Bonnie Hess of
Salamanca; eight children, Dennis S. Hathaway of Portville, Patty (Jeff)
Jimerson of Salamanca, Jacqueline “Jackie” (Dave) Jones of Clarksville,
Tennessee, Lori Hathaway of Salamanca, Patty Hathaway of Kentucky, and Alfred
Lewis Hathaway, Hazel Hathaway, and Patrick Hathaway, all of Salamanca; twenty
two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Allen “Squirt”
(Calla) Hathaway and Steven P. (Linda Clayton) Hathaway, both of Shinglehouse,
Pa.; a sister, Jane (Ted) Pangburn of Richburg; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Dennis was predeceased by a
sister Jacqueline Thompson; and a niece, Nicole Pangburn.
Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
on Tuesday at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street,
Shinglehouse, and from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 14, 2018, where
funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with Mike Miles of Smethport, Pa.,
officiating. Burial will be in Lamphier Cemetery, Eldred, Pa.
