Cattaraugus-Allegany-Chautauqua Dems to Hold Straw Poll for
23rd Congressional District
RANDOLPH (9/11/17)
Three Democratic Committee Chairs of the western southern tier today announced
that an open to the public "23rd Congressional District Democratic straw
poll" will be hosted by the three county Democratic Parties on Sat. Oct.
21st at the Randolph Fire Hall, 70 Main St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Currently there are
seven Democratic candidates who are lining up for the 2018 Democratic Primary
to take on incumbent Republican Congressman Tom Reed.
Democratic Chairs
Frank Puglisi of Cattaraugus County, Mike McCormick of Allegany County and
Norman P. Green of Chautauqua County made the straw poll announcement.
The admission charge
to the straw poll is $10 per person and every attendee who is admitted will get
a ballot. Candidates, or their designated spokesperson, will be allowed to
speak and then will retreat to bales of hay where they will have the
opportunity to talk one-on-one with voters. Following this opportunity to get
to know the candidates, ballots will be cast and a winner will be announced.
Lunch and refreshments will be provided by the Randolph Boy Scouts. Candidates signed up for the straw poll are Businessman Ian Golden, Ithaca; Attorney Eddie Sundquist, Jamestown; College Administrator Tracy Mitrano, Penn Yann; College Economist Charles Whalen, Geneva; and Teacher Rick Gallant, Corning. Retired Air Force officer Max Della Pia of Owego and former Star Trek actor John Hertzler of Ulysses have yet to confirm they are attending the straw poll, but are expected. Word of other candidates stepping into the NY23 Primary Election consideration is being heard, and they will be invited to participate in the October Straw Poll if considered serious challengers by the three county chairs.
"The purpose of the straw poll is to have a lot of fun and to introduce the prospective candidates to the western southern tier's voters. Everyone and we mean everyone is invited to the event and we hope to have a good turn-out," said Puglisi, McCormick and Green.
The district comprises eleven counties: Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Chemung, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tompkins and Yates along with parts of Ontario, and Tioga counties. Nearly 47,000 Democrats reside in the three western southern tier counties and make up 36% of the total 132,000 Democratic registrants of the Congressional district.
